Vamos! Cycling – Road cycling holidays in Las Alpujarras, Southern Spain

Training For Roadies

For the road cyclists and who want more of a serious week, southern Spain is the perfect area to train for the Etape du Tour, cyclosportives and other long distance marathon events. The area is regularly used for the Vuelta à España as the Sierra Nevada is seen as a real challenge.

With Cádiar at 900 metres above sea level, we have a choice of rides that can take you up to 2000 metres or down to 0 metres (a dip in the sea is an option too!), and anything in between! We won’t forget you are on holiday.

We offer a training package that we advise regular cyclists to take because of the better value if riding every day, which includes 7 nights bed, breakfast, guided rides, vehicle support, snacks and airport transfers from Granada, Almeria or Malaga. The price for this is £285 (£320 from 1st September) (does not include flights, insurance or evening meals).

Vamos! Tour 19th-25 September 2010

We are pleased to announce the special Vamos! Tour which winds around the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains with stops in the amazing cities of Granada and Guadix. The mountainous nature of the area means this is not a tour for beginners. You must be a regular rider/racer to meet the challenges and have a good base fitness.

Sunday 19th September
Arrive at Malaga airport no later than 3pm for transfer back to our house in Cadiar for a home cooked, 3 course dinner.

Monday 20th September
After breakfast you assemble bikes then ride round the area with Gary to make sure everything is working (with the bike and the rider!) Dinner at the house again.

Tuesday 21st September
After breakfast we load the car with your chosen luggage. Then cycle to Granada, a distance of 92km with 1200 mts of climbing, going through Torvizcon, Orgiva, Lanjaron and Beznar, on quiet smooth roads with a lunch/coffee stop in Lanjaron.
Our hotel in Granada is the 3 star Hotel Las Almenas* right in the centre of this beautiful and historical city. After you arrive the rest of the day and evening is yours to do as you please. You could sample some delicious tapas in one of the many bars, take a walk round the Albaicin or cathedral, or simply people watch while relaxing outside a cafe.

Wednesday 22nd September
This ride is up the magnificent Pico Veleta to an altitude of over 3000 metres (snow permitting!) After breakfast we cycle to the outskirts of Granada before starting this stunning 40km climb up the Sierra Nevada. (It's downhill all the way back!) Lunch at the ski station on return to refuel your legs!

Late afternoon will take us to the magnificent Alhambra Palace (above) for a bit of culture and a tour round the Palace and gardens (optional), then the evening is yours to do what you want and we spend another night in Hotel Las Almenas.

Thursday 23rd September
Leave Granada and head for Guadix, round the northern side of the Sierra Nevada, a trip of 58km with 905 mts of climbing. Become troglodytes for the night in a cave hotel, Cuevas Pedro Antonio de Alarcon*. The evening is yours to explore Guadix.

Friday 24th September
The last ride of the week. Head along the flat plains before turning towards Puerto de Ragua, a climb of 15km up to 2000m which then provides a thrilling descent from the cross country skiing station. The last climb home is through Valor, Yegen and Mecina Bombaron, giving you a total for the day of 86km with 1800 mts of climbing.
Once back in Cadiar, it'll be time to pack up your bike before heading into town for a farewell dinner.
